Any ideas? I did a mapquest thing, and it said between walking and the transit its going to take me 48 minutes or so ?

Also, how bad would it be to just buy a scooter or something and ride that to work? The traffic can't really be that bad?

One possibility: ride an S-route metrobus down 16th street to Constitution Ave.
On Constitution Ave., transfer to a 13C- metrobus to the Pentagon.

Never underestimate the chaos that often is DC traffic. If I had your commute, I'd walk to U Street metro and take the green and yellow lines there. I can't imagine it taking 48 minutes unless there are constant delays on metro (which, to be sure, are never out of the question). Going the bus route also looks viable.
