My girlfriend and I are moving to Washington DC this year and we don't know our way around. Our first order of business is finding a place to live!

What are the best areas for a couple in their mid 20's? We would like to be near some action, places to walk around, parks, etc.

Are there any neighborhoods where we could get a yard but still be near happening spots? (this is optional)

A concern is being within 30-45 minutes of driving time from her work at 395 and 95 in Springfield, VA

I am just trying to get any information I can. Thanks everyone!

You leave out a small detail: budget. There are actually parks throughout the region, so unless you want to be near one of the bigger parks, you can potentially find homes with a yard, and near a park, in many areas. "Happening" areas? You can find lots to do in many areas, even within a reasonable drive, but being within walking disance of, say, Old Town Alexandria would up your budget considerably (though it would be commuting agains most traffic to get to the area of 95/395, aka The Mixing Bowl-- at least it was known as that before construction). I'd talk with a realtor and tell them what you're looking for.

If you think you are going to find the typical large suburban family home with a yard anywhere near the nightlife districts, then this is not the city for you. Have you even visited DC before?
