Hah... So many problems with VW... And then they tout GERMAN ENGINEERING! I hate how the Germans think they're best in engineering!

A family friend has a Mercedes that also smells like crayons. From my research it's likely the insulation used under the carpet in the trunk. She doesn't care enough to take care of the issue but I HATE riding in her car. There is no way I could deal with that day in and day out!

VW's can be quality cars IF you do your consumer research. Some years are good, some -- not. Always research before buying.

That's exactly right.

In fact, it isn't even just by model and year. I put over 350,000 miles on a '97 Golf, but I know some people have nothing but trouble with that same year & model. My wife enjoyed her 2002 New Beetle, but some of them were prone to lots and lots of problems. Actually, all the VWs I've owned (including an old AC Bug, and a diesel Rabbit) have been stellar cars.

The problem is that, while some of VWs lemons were confined to year & model, others just randomly appear. It's very frustrating, and ultimately has damaged VWs sales over the years.

They over all just have a very bad record of reliability ever since they started making the new beetle. All of the clever high dollar sales advertisements can not hide this fact .I wouldnt want to pend big money on a new one knowing this.

German people are cold, arrogant, self-absorbed and rude. Don't believe me? Go there--you will not be accepted. Plus their food sucks.

And their cars are overrated, overpriced and full of problems.

I've had no problems with it at all: no interior parts issues, no electrical problems, no mechanical problems, no paint issues, AC blows cold, heater works great in the winter, etc. First year new models (like your 2006) come with gremlins for the most part. Mine is a 2008 so perhaps all of the issues were sorted out in the prior 24 months?? I'm planning on trading in my Rabbit for a 2015 VW Golf late next year or early 2015. I love the hatchback style, good fuel economy and roomy interior. These puppies lowered with custom wheels are sweet. Perfect for a single guy like me.

-Cheers.
When walking to my car today I was just thinking that I could be happy with it for years if the major issues weren't there. I didn't realize it was a first year model, BC the window sticker had 2007. It was a tough time in our lives and I literally called the dealer, asked if he had what I wanted, drove over to test it and and drove away with it. They took my trade in and a check! Now you have me wanting to check out the Golf...

I spent a week in and around Bavaria and my experience does not support your statement.

Considering I lived there, they are serious yet reasonably kind people. You become their best friend if you actually try to speak in German. I was a hit with the ladies speaking fluent German with an American accent.
