Again, I'm not an expert on LEED, but I believe it is about reducing the building's carbon footprint. There are other points available for: being near mass-transit, specifying building materials that are relatively local, providing showers so that bicyclists can wash up before work/class/whatever, etc. None of these things help make the building more energy efficient, but they help to reduce its carbon footprint.

In fact one of the big criticisms I have heard of LEED cert is that it focuses too much on the building, and not the larger context - so you can get LEED cert for building a casino hotel in the desert in Nevada.
Well, you always find something in my posts with which to disagree! Emissions are reduced by letting Priuses park closer? And a few posts ago you were saying Target wasn't telling people what car to buy! I guess they are!

emissions are reduced if more people buy fuel efficient cars and letting fuel efficient cars park closer is a (small) incentive to their purchase. And giving someone a small incentive to do something, is not forcing them to do it. Do department stores tell me to shop on holiday weekends - no, but they do provide an incentive to do so.

I happen to be aware of and interested in LEED certification issues, so I thought I would share what I know. Take that as you will.

How is it helpful to the environment for people to junk their perfectly good cars to buy a Prius?

It's not. But how often do people junk their car when buying a new car? Most people sell their old car--or trade it in--to be bought by someone else.

When one has to buy a new car anyway, which most of us do at some point, it matters which new car you choose. a fuel efficient one or a less efficient one.

Why do you keep mentioning Prius? Are the parking spots only allowed to be used by prius'? I thought they were for all fuel efficient cars.

Im sure you dont mean it that way, but when you keep saying Prius, it sounds like theres some "prius=obnoxious yuppie" thing you mean to imply. Personally I am aware of high income, obnoxious people, who drive all kinds of cars. That some of them choose to drive cars with high MPG, thus lower emissions, is a good and admirable thing, I think. Its ESPECIALLY good if their lifestyles mean they need to drive a great deal. I'm not sure why its considered desirable to mock them (note, I do NOT drive a Prius, but my conventionally fueled vehicle is relatively efficient)

OK, the post referencing this says reserved parking spots for "energy-efficient vehicles". That's pretty vauge. What are they going to do, have a list on a pole, like they do for handicapped notices? "You may park here if you are drving Car A, B, C,", etc. "DO NOT EVEN THINK OF PARKING HERE IF YOU ARE DRIVING A MINIVAN,", etc. Are they going to PAY an employee to police this?

BTW, the last two cars we replaced had to be scrapped. We are not in the habit of replacing cars very frequently. A couple who are friends of ours had a Prius, and when it got totaled in an accident, they replaced it with a conventional-engine car.
