Speaking of the Marx Brothers, does anyone remember Groucho's quizz show "You Bet Your Life"? I remember Jose Gonzales Gonzales and Dr Joyce Brothers who made her TV debut there. He had other people who became famous but I don't remember them off-hand.

"Say the secret word and win $100."

I can picture Groucho sitting at his desk talking with people and if they said the "secret word" a duck would come down. $100 dollars! Can you imagine that!? That used to be BIG BUCKS!! I don't remember any of his guests though. I think I was too little.

I remember Dr. Joyce Brothers, but from other things. Don't remember ever seeing anything with the Marx Bros.

I was raised rural so we didn't have cable TV but once I moved out on my own to the "big" town I did. Was a factory shift worker so late at night they would run a lot of black & white shows. That is the only reason I know about some of these game shows from reruns. I would have been to young when they were actually on also.

My parents got cable as soon as it was offered down here. I think that was around '84 maybe. Ex and I used to come down to watch tv with them.

To me, $100 these days is big bucks. I'd love to say a secret word and 100 (legitimate) dollars would rain on me.

Watching the old Groucho shows is like going back in a time capsule. I found a set in the dollar store and they are just so funny. When they scan the audience, it is like seeing people from another planet almost. . . . . & yet I was around back then.

On an episode of Match Game, they asked a question that involved Anita Bryant, a mildly popular singer who had come out as a homophobe. The whole Anita Bryant thing was a big deal in that day and age, and here was Match Game (of all things) working her into the conversation. Brett Somers gave a small speech about how she disliked the woman's stance, but the audience collectively held their breath as Gene asked Charles Nelson-Reilly for his response to the question. CNR never said out loud that he was gay, and the panelists made only the most vague remarks in that arena (always as a good-natured joke). Still, it was one of those things everybody knew but didn't say out loud.

After milking the moment or all it was worth, his response was a simple "Who???"

Wow some great discussion early in the thread about the classy old shows like What's My Line. I read through all the way and didn't see one I used to love mentioned "Stump the Stars". Remember that one?

Also might mention Who do you Trust with Johnny Carson pre-tonight show. And "Truth or Consequences"
I must have been about 10 and said to my mom, I like that Bob Barker guy! and she said, oh he's nothing, he'll never go anywhere
