The stun gun theory by Smit was later refuted by Mike Kane.
Atty Kane has noted that there were many secrets in this case, the media got it wrong and that the public has received a great deal of mis-information and red herrings.
Kane felt Boulder police had certainly been inexperienced, but they were not off base. The intruder theory was unfounded and illogical, since autopsy revealed JBR had undigested pineapple in her intestine (and this according to the coroner is absorbed by enzymes more rapidly/usually within 2 hours) so it was within that hour and a half that she had eaten her snack and then was murdered.
The autopsy reports noted the marks on JBR were possibly caused by snaps, a plastic toy (Nintendo has plastic round "toy kits" at this time that were found in the basement) and/ or the body having been moved.
New District Attorney Garnett has re-opened the case. According to the 2010 article.
Interesting reading...I can see how the detective went in another direction. But, really, praying with the family? That is such a huge boundary issue...suggests a major lack of perspective to me.
What about the fact that he was hired by the butt-covering DA's office in the first place? There goes his credibility, right there.
In view of his obvious bias, nothing Lou Smit has said or opined means a damn thing to me...this case just keeps piling up with political interferance and corruption IMO. Mary Lacey and Lou Smit both should hang their heads in shame for being a part of this absolute farce of "justice".

I don't see it as a boundary issue or lack of perspective.......just the typical "good cop/bad cop" routine.
He was playing the good cop to gain their trust and perhaps get more information. Too bad it didn't work.
I just did not like the "tone" of the article. It was obviously biased. That is not good detective work. He was obviously snowed. Good thing he is retired, sorry folks, but he is ready for the rocker and his Ensure drink. Leave the police work to folks who still have brain matter.
Lou Smit fashioned the IDI theory for the defense, he is now deceased.
Lets hope Boulders new D.A. Garnett (who has re-opened the case) will deem it important to reveal facts to the public, instead of the snow job and red herrings forom Mary Lacy and others. (she should be ethically reprimanded, or disbarred for the media dis-information fed to the public, imo)
btw it seems absurd JAR was cleared because he had a "movie ticket stub" so this *proves* he was in Atlanta at time of the crime. There is no way to trace a movie ticket in those days. Absurd.
Plus owners of private jets (especially in 1996) did not file flight plans, a trip from Denver Co. to Atlanta by a private pilot is not to be ruled out, jmo. There were many loose ends.

Incriminating Evidence
Lack of Cooperation: The parents were not cooperative in talking with the authorities in a timely fashion:
* They placed strict conditions on how they would be interviewed.
* Their first interview came in April 1997, 4 months after the
murder.
* In April 1998, "John Ramsey wrote a letter to Boulder District Attorney Alex Hunter at home and offered to meet. The only ground rule: no Boulder police would be allowed in the room."
* They hired the most powerful lawyers in Colorado immediately
after JonBenet’s death.
None of this could ever be considered incriminating and should be SOP when dealing with the police.
I didn't read further.
