Austin is the place to be. There are tons of outdoor activities and LOTS of cultural diversity because of the University. It is not just geared for the youthful. The housing close to downtown is expensive, but there are plenty of neat areas in the nearby hill country where you can live in the hills and country - but still be close enough to commute. There are so many outdoor things to do around here and many places to visit in the hill country to get you out of doors, in the woods and camping. Houston and Dallas both have more roadway infrastructure, if that is what you want. But, keep in mind that although convenient, it is not too attractive. There are so many hike and bike trails and the Colorado River runs through the center of town forming a nice lake for canoes and jogging the trails. The weather in all of these cities is hot in the Summer. I find Austin is more comfortable weather wise as the humidity in Houston makes it unbearable and the winters in Dallas much colder. Dallas is dryer, but they get just as hot if not hotter than Austin because of the amount of concrete. Both Dallas and Houston seem much flatter than Austin as well. Because of the hills and elevation, Austin is aesthetically pleasing.

There are tons of places to eat in Austin, many parks, lakes abound and the people are very laid back. Austin has more of a focus on the environment than many cities so there is a lot of green space. There are tons of interesting small businesses as people are adventuresome and have opened up some quaint eateries and crazy colorful businesses you would not think of. Additionally, you will find the conveniences of a big city as well....without the mega highways and all of the concrete.

Dallas- Concrete jungle and lots of business people, more uptight
Houston- congested, humid and lots of pollution, lots of roadway construction on those beautiful mega highways

Everyone loves Austin (except Aggies). However, if you like a big city, you may find Austin too small (even though its traffic is big city). Some of it even seems a little third world with lax building codes (lots of tin sheds). But it is good for nature. Dallas has White Rock Lake and is redeveloping its Trinity River into a huge park with Calatrava suspension bridges - all of central Dallas has nice trees and the topography is good in Lakewood (White Rock Lake) and even better in Oak Cliff.

Dallas has an extensive light rail and subway system that is growing each year by leaps and bounds. This is something no other Texas city has...

Dallas has one section of subway from Downtown to Mockingbird. I haven't heard of more subway lines being built. There was suppose to be one at Dallas Love Field, but it was shot down. Houston is also expanding, so I guess there is another Texas city that has its transit growing by leaps and bounds every year.
