Del Rio is a friendly city with little crime compared to other border towns. Our educational system is great. It is not just a place for border patrols to live. Del Rio largest employers are the maquiladora industry, Laughlin Air force base (one of best pilot program in nation), and the local school system. It is a small town with its own mall, downtown area, natural spring flowing through city, a branch of Sul Ross State University, Southwest Texas Junior College, and a beautiful huge lake used for ESPN fishing tournaments. Better homes are located in the northern part of town. Del Rio is really the best of the border!!!

Just north of the mall is a great huge Walmart and various chain stores (can't remember which ones but things like Lowe's, Office Depot, etc). I believe the more north you go in that northern area, the pricier/larger the homes are.
I know that area. I visited Texas in 2006 and spent time mapping and driving all over the place. I drove down to Del Rio from Spring Branch (where I was staying) and actually stopped at that Walmart. They had a nice housing section, just down the street that was nice. Del Rio Elementary school was in that housing section. It is a scruffy little town but it was a nice little community. I left there and on my drive back, I got stopped and grilled by the border patrol because when I pulled up to their checkpoint, I just sat there. I didn't know he needed me to roll down my window. I didn't know WHAT they wanted. He motioned me to roll down my window and asked my why I didn't roll down my window until he told me to. Was that a crime I told him I didn't know he wanted me to roll it down. I stated that I was not from around there. My mistake was then telling them I was from California and driving through Texas looking for a place to purchase land for retirement. I don't think they believed me. They made me pull over and park. I was female, alone and driving in an isolated area off the border. You could look over and see Mexico. They searched my trunk and everything. What an experience. What made it worse was my rental car had Florida plates Thank goodness I still had my rental agreement in my purse. I gave him that and it had my California address on it. They finally let me go. I could have pulled out my OWN badge, but I didn't. I would have if it had gotten a little overboard, just to show them that I was no criminal, but I just let them do what they needed to do. I hope your son has a great career.
