We're a young couple with 3 small children (ages 7 and under) looking for a place to start the rest of our life. We definitely want to be in a rural area, a friendly small town, with good, safe schools. A good magnet elementary school would be a major plus. We do NOT want to live in a subdivision--2 acres or more would be ideal. The town need not be super progressive--we're a fairly typical Southern family. A nearby lake would be fabulous, as we're boat-owners, but it's not absolutely mandatory. The one other requirement is that we don't want to get more than 90 or so miles from the Shreveport, Louisiana, area.

Oh, I should add that the job market in the area doesn't matter as DH works offshore, and I work from home and can live anywhere.

Can anyone help with some recommendations?

I don't think you'll be getting a magnet school with these, but Tatum, Diana (New Diana Schools), & Harleton would be the 3 that come to mind in my area.

Hallsville is a good one, but may be a bit bigger than you're looking for.

OK, so I'm a little late replying so maybe you've already found what you were/are looking for! But I 2nd the New Diana school district...it's a small 2A school but an excellent choice! I graduated from there, as did all of my cousins and even parents (and one grandparent). My husband and I are in Dallas now but plan on building in Diana eventually and put our daughter in school there. From what I hear Tatum is a good district as well...not sure how much land runs out that way though.

Just thought I'd throw in my measly 2 cents! Good luck!!

Even Tyler doesn't have magnet elementary schools. So I think that is out. Whitehouse, next to Tyler, which is about 90 miles from Shreveport has a very good 4A school and much of the school area is rural where you could find that 1 - 4 acre home or homesite. But pretty expensive.

Hawkins is a cute town with a good 2A school, and Mineola and Quitman have 3A (i think) schools in quiet, country settings. Quitman gets busy once a year with the Bass Classic on Lake Fork, and Mineola has more culture with a good community theater group and a pretty active arts community. Stick with Wood County, though.
