Jogging trails in small towns? Don't think I have ever seen that.

To find a small town around Dallas - and to get beyond the suburbs - you'd have to look at places such as Prosper, Celina, Crandall, Waxahachie, Forney, Red Oak, Ennis, Princeton, Midlothian, Burleson, Decatur, Royse City, Terrell. Out of that group I'd say Prosper has the best schools, but it will be sucked up into suburbia as soon as the housing market turns around.

The best schools are in the suburbs with the exception of the Highland Park school district which is a segregated part of inner city Dallas and is probably the best school district in the state - and also the wealthiest. The better suburban school districts are Plano, Frisco, Argyle, Lovejoy, Allen, Rockwall, Coppell, Carroll, Grapevine-Colleyville and others

Outdoor activities? Like what? It gets pretty hot for part of the summer, so if you are outside you'd want to be in water.

Flower Mound and Keller are both nice suburbs with good schools. Not sure about jogging trails though. There are probably sidewalks.

Here's a little trick. Go to Googlemaps.com, click on "get directions," and then click on the little bicycle icon. The street map will fade and you'll get a map of a lot of the area trails. Most of these also function as running trails.

North Richland Hills has a pretty long stretch of trails. Colleyville, Grapevine do too. Flower Mound has a little bit, Keller not so much. Richardson, Plano, and Allen look like they have quit a bit of trails. Mesquite is currently undertaking an ambitious project to run pedestrian/running/cycling trails throughout the entire city which will be connected to all of the city's parks. It's not currently available yet.

Dallas is primarily a suburban city. It is a combination of many (former) small towns that are now unique neighborhoods. There are many unique neighborhoods that have their own character and feel -- but they share a police, fire and mayor with other neighborhoods. You'll be missing out on some of the best trails in safe, suburban areas if you don't look in Dallas. So check out the Katy Trail and White Rock Lake.

And Santa Fe Trail, which connects White Rock Lake to Deep Ellum almost to Downtown and Fair Park. The Katy Trail is also being extended to the lake in the next couple of years. See: Dallas Parks - Hikes and Biking Trails

Unless you are White and Wealthy I would avoid Arygle. It is a horse community and there are no jogging trails. The police department is run by a guy that looks like Barney Fife ( you get the picture). It is definitely a Good ol Boy town.
