All the idiots who have never been to Houston, and by extension Texas, should not have a say in this for their answers will be and are biased against Texas. Likewise, the same is said for those who have never been to any state, or city for that fact, mentioned. It is merely a matter of taste. Odds are someone who has grown up in Texas is more inclined to lean toward Texas. Just as much for the person raised in New York to lean toward the New York side. Personally I think that there are few people who have lived in multiple states long enough to truly experience the whole in which those states have to offer. Which is why I, for one, shall refrain toward saying anything ignorant that would seem like a witty reply to one, but would otherwise prove slanderous to the city/state in which they are trying to "protect".

No way. Austin is one of the most widely loved cities in Texas. Even by people who've never even been here(they think it's some liberal oasis in conservative Texas). Houston has got it bad.

I don't even know how to begin to respond to such a remark.

I disagree Austin has kinda a black sheep reputation in Texas. Sure some people love, but many more hate it.

Austin thinks it's the Black Sheep and thinks everyone hates it. Texans don't hate it, but they just don't understand all this hype it gets.

I never understood this whole Austin 'hype' thing. Austin isn't hyped up. People saying that Austin is 'hype' and then saying it isn't is a form of bashing. Some people that live, or visit, Austin like it and tell people they enjoy it, but this hardly qualifies for hype.

Sure it is!

Hype:
- to create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods; promote or publicize showily
- exaggerated publicity; hoopla.
- an ingenious or questionable claim, method, etc., used in advertising, promotion, or publicity to intensify the effect.

Oasis of Texas? Live Music Capital of the World? Best place to Live? Blue in a sea of red? Yada yada yada etc.
Austin uses these constantly. Because the claims are not quite solid (some would even say misleading), and because they're used so often, it's hype.
Just ask anyone outside of Texas with little/no real experience with the state, what city they think (perceive) they would prefer. The hype has worked!

Additionally, it seems people encounter a lot of upturned noses in Austin anytime that Houston (or Dallas) is mentioned. That certainly doesn't help things.

That makes no sense.

Bashing:
- verbal abuse, as of a group or a nation

What do people usually associate with Austin? Are you claiming it's usually negativity? You've been living under a rock if you think that.

Houston on the other hand, is known for little aside from negative stories. Sprawl, pollution, Enron, along with countless untruths.

The positives of Houston are rarely known. The negatives of Austin rarely are known. And I'm talking in general, not necessarily on City-data.

You have it backwards. I've lived in both cities and speak from experience.

Case and point of Austin bashing.
