I think you have that may have that reversed, if you are looking at the same list I am (which has Texas at #14, Cali at #13, and FL at #9):

Most Dangerous States 2008 - AOL Money & Finance

The lower number is WORSE. As in, the #1 most dangerous state is Nevada (listed at 1). The 15th most dangerous state is Alabama, listed at #15. Same with the murder numbers, the lower the number the worse it is. Like Lousiana is 1 for murder (as in #1), and Texas is 18th in murder (ranks far below).

So the previous poster's assertion that FL and CA are more dangerous than Texas may be correct, at least according to this list.

Still, being in the top 15 most dangerous states is nothing to be proud of...

I knew in my mind that TX was a tad better than CA in overall crime and a tad more than a tad better than FL.

You are right though; I did get mixed up on the murder part as lower is again, worse. Texas with its 18 makes it better than CA with its 10 and FL with its 15. Taking population into the fact, I can see why CA is worse, but FL, oh my, that's a place I definitely wouldn't want to be.

You are right; no state with a high crime rate really has bragging rights. The poster commented, "There is a reason why Texas is one of the safest states in America." That is definitely way wrong.

Thanks for correcting me and my apologies for my error.

Exactly so both posters are correct somewhat. Texas is not the safest of states but it's slightly safer than Cali and Florida but not by much.

That was a cool link.. I was blown away that New Mexico was the 3rd worst on the list!

It did not mention why Texas was like 13 on the list, or what areas contributed to the stat. I mean El Paso was the 2nd safest city in the country at one time.

The two that surprised me were South Carolina and Delaware. I guess because I never hear anything about them. I mean, Delaware? Really??

One good thing is that in the top 15 dangerous cities, none are located in Texas. There are 2 in CA and 1 in FL and New Orleans ranks #1 as the most dangerous. I'm not surprised.

In the top 25 safest cities, several are in Texas:

9. Allen

16. Frisco

17. Sugar Land

19. Round Rock

22. Missouri City

California boasts five as well, but Florida....not a one. NY has the #1 city and CA, the #2 for safest.

It is pretty interesting stuff.

Texas is large, but the population is only about 24 million, CA has 37 million, and FL, 18 million.
Texas is not looked at as a dangerous state compared to CA and FL which both are known for their gangs. Like I said for Texas to have such a big population, it is very safe.

Where was El Paso on the Safest City List? Like I said people in that forum area kept touting about it being the 2nd safest for so long, and I kept telling them bull.
