AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Wearing pink tennis shoes to prepare for nearly 13 consecutive hours of standing, a Democratic Texas state senator on Tuesday began her one-woman filibuster to block a GOP-led effort that would effectively close most abortion clinics across the nation’s second most-populous state.
Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth began the filibuster at 11:18 a.m. CDT Tuesday. In order to derail a vote in the GOP-dominated Senate, she must keep speaking on the bill until midnight — the deadline for the end of the 30-day special session.
Before Davis began speaking, her chair was removed. Rules stipulate she remain standing, not lean on her desk or take any breaks — even for meals or to use the bathroom.
When combined in a state 773 miles wide and 790 miles long and with 26 million people, the measures would become the most stringent set of laws to impact the largest number of people in the nation.

Gotta love her standing up (literally) for something she believes in, but the cynic in me says that Perry will just keep calling special sessions and wasting taxpayer dollars until the bill is passed. Of course Republicans will roundly ridicule and demonize her even though they'd do the exact same thing if the shoe were on the other foot.

The Republican Party has tried everything in their power to get rid of this woman from Texas politics through redistricting but it hasn't worked. She still won her last election despite the lines being redrawn in Tarrant County. Wendy Davis has emerged as the leader of the Democratic Party in Texas. She is a serious threat to the status quo in this state.

Good. I was pleased to see her re-elected and I'm pleased she is doing what she's doing. She's not rolling over on this.

I certainly hope so. Im not anti-Republican, but many elected Texas Republicans give cause for shame.
