I read an article in a AAA magazine many years ago about a trip someone took to this area. Since then I have always wanted to go. Can someone tell me the best month to go? I'd like to go when it's not super hot, but I don't want to go when everything's dead from winter temps. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

It depends on what weather you like the most. I'd go in spring or fall, but the climate there is moderate. It's not ever "super hot" like the Big Bend Nat'l Park is in summer. May and June may be the hottest months, but the low humidity makes it tolerable. Be sure to visit Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory! Have a good time. It's my favorite part of Texas.

Gorgeous area! I might recommend September or October. The weather is warm during the day, cold at night. Alpine and that entire surrounding area are just gorgeous. Marfa is definitely worth seeing; small artistic community. More going on there than you think.

Have a great time!

Oh yes, I would love to go to the observatory. Thanks for the replies.

I love the fall in that part of the state. October would be a great time.

Just for the heck of it, I'll post the little chart I sent to one of my relatives that was asking about temperatures.

The numbers are from WUnderground calendar view, from August 1-15, 2010.

The towns are Alpine, TX, Alamogordo, NM and Farmington, NM.

Alpine Alamo Farmington
89/59 89/64 86/62
93/55 95/66 81/64
91/75 96/66 86/63
93/75 98/64 90/62
91/62 95/68 84/63
91/75 95/64 93/63
91/59 96/69 88/60
91/82 93/69 82/55
84/64 91/62 88/64
91/71 96/66 90/59
91/77 95/68 89/57
89/62 96/66 91/63
93/75 100/71 90/57
91/68 98/71 93/68
91/62 98/66 97/57

I should have used a spreadsheet. The columns are too close together, and that's not what they looked like when I made the chart.

Oh well......as you can see, Alpine, on most days, is cooler than Alamogordo.

Cathy4017: My hunch was correct, you were referring to Farmington regarding my query in your PM. It has much colder winters than Alpine or Alamo, according to what I've read. Maybe not a whole lot of snow, but cold.

Yes, it is a lot colder in the winter, along with nights that cool down more in the summer. Along with that comes a shorter growing season, too. It doesn't seem to snow that much, so one wouldn't be shoveling it all winter!

Even at 5500 ft+ Farmington and Aztec can get hot, with the occasional 100+, but from what I've looked at, not nearly so often.

Alpine/FD/Marfa are the most ideal climate in Texas for sure, though!
