The series is fantastic. Even the episodes that I have no general interest in (Without Bias) are compelling. The Two Escobars and The Band That Wouldn't Die are my favorites thus far. I'd love to see the Bo Jackson episode. Netflix has a decent selection on the instant queue.
I'm watching the Ben Johnson one right now, have they done a show on Arturo Gatti? I think that one would be awesome..
I watched the Bo Jackson show with my two sons ages 11 and 13 and I told them think Lebron X10, I was 13 in '85 and still remember all the Bo Knows commercials. Bo Jackson was a freak of nature, what an amazing athlete.
I've said this before but will address it here. ESPN drives me batty. You have comedy (bad comedy at that) with the Skip Bayless/Steven A. Smith debate business, you have attitude and name calling with Merill Hoge, you have political one line zingers late at night. Then there is the ESPY's where everyone from the network dresses up in tuxedos. And your cable bill goes up-up-up.
It's sad because if you eliminate that kind of chicanery they can still rock. Like what was described Outside The Lines, 30 for 30, and the other previously listed items are solid reporting. 12 years ago they done a similar 30 for 30 type documentary, called ESPN Sport Century with one hour biographs of the top 100 (in their opinion) major sports figures of the 20th century. There isn't one of the documentaries that were made that I didn't enjoy. And ESPN won an Emmy Award that year for best television documentary.
And it's not that I don't watch the network at all. There a few half hour programs I'll tune into from time to time in addition to what has previously been listed. The ESPN movies that have been released on dvd are noteworthy as well. My favorite one is The Junction Boys. 3 is another good one as well.
But anymore when I want news I'll take the NFL Network. Same with baseball with the MLB network.
And yes, I saw the Bo Jackson 30 for 30. Excellent. A similar documentary was done on him with ESPN Sport Century in 2000.
ITA. What is worse, is I remember when ESPN just did sports and wasnt ever part of the story...
I liked the one on Ben Johnson and the 100 meters in the 88 Olympics.
The Marcus Dupree one was excellent also.
So was the one about SMU.
Like to see one on Cam Newton and Auburn someday.
The Ben Johnson one was excellently done.
If you don't believe all the sprinters in the 80's weren't juicing,i got some land to sell you!
The Marcus Dupree 30 for 30 was well done also.
If had one to pick one it would be "little big men"
can't watch this without getting emotional
Yea, I love the 30 for 30's. The Ole Miss one was moving, and the Pablo Escobar one was interesting too. Though, the one I'll always remember is the SMU Scandal.
I'd love to see one on Jerry Tarkanian and his Runnin Rebel teams.
