During the day, I’d say very safe. At night, I’d use common sense, travel in groups if possible and stay aware, especially near the transit center/I-5.

Safe for what? It has a new light rail station and has added lots of multi-family housing. It is not Familyland, but an urban crossroads where you might run into all manner of folk. I don't think it is less safe than many other urban Seattle neighborhoods.

Probably depends on area but it seems a bit less safe lately as there have been shootings near the new light rail station.

SPD Blotter:

"On 12-11-2021 at 2330 hours, officers were dispatched to a shooting call in the Northgate neighborhood. According to the call, an unknown person fired three shots out of a car at the caller’s son and then drove away. Officers arrived and located evidence of a shooting. Officers then contacted the caller and the victim. No one was injured and no property damage was located."

"[11/2/21] At 11:00 p.m., a 911 caller in the 11500 block of 5th Avenue Northeast reported he’d found his roommate unresponsive. Almost simultaneously, more 911 callers in the area reported hearing gunshots. Police arrived and found a 51-year-old man with a gunshot wound. Seattle Fire Department medics responded and declared the man deceased."

"Detectives Investigating Homicide Near Northgate...October 15, 2020 6:11 pm...Homicide detectives are currently investigating after a man was killed by gunfire this afternoon in the parking lot of an apartment complex in North Seattle.

At about 2:50 PM, officers responded to multiple calls of shots fired and a person down in the parking lot of the apartment complex in the 11200 block of Roosevelt Way NE. Officers arrived and found the victim and immediately provided first aid until the Seattle Fire Department arrived. The victim was transported by medics to the hospital but was declared deceased enroute to the hospital."

That's it for shootings in the Northgate area since the Northgate Station opened. None were near the Northgate Station.

The only thing I ever noticed, when I lived in the general area, but over just east of 15th Av NE, was that there tended to be frequent car accidents on N'gate Way after dark. I used to walk to the mall and back, sometimes in the evenings, and accidents would take place as I was passing by. No violent crime that I was aware of back then, but it was before mass homelessness, and before all the development that's taken place around the mall, which includes a lot of newer apt. buildings.

The area has definitely changed but not sure it is unsafe. I grew up nearby but we are talking 45 years ago. My mom taught me how to drive on an empty northgate parking lot on a Sunday morning. Condos now occupy this drivers learning space!

I think as cities become more dense the possibility of crime does rise. We are in a period of
uncertainty right now but this won’t be forever. Generally this area is not high crime but in our current status everything is elevated.

Northgate mall is now gone. The next useful use of this property hopefully will be more stabilizing with more residential and the hockey center. I am optimistic.

What is interesting to me is if you live long enough you can see multiple uses of properties. It actually is quite fascinating to watch.
