As most of you know, 2017 has been an amazing year so far for wildflowers. These pictures were taken on March 28, driving down the Banner Grade toward Borrego Springs. The tall bushes are wild lilacs, but I'm not sure if the yellow flowers are desert sunflowers or something else. Anyway, it was an amazing sight!

Oh wow, those are BEAUTIFUL Clark.

Are those the yellow flowers you were talking about in your other thread coming down the banner grade? I think you're right and they're desert sunflowers. I was thinking that maybe you were seeing wild mustard. There are hillsides near me in East County that are entirely yellow right now due to the mustard (which of course, is an invasive, non-native plant, but boy it sure looks beautiful this year!)

I love lilacs (both the native ceanothus and the "real" lilacs) so I will have to get up to Julian soon. It seems like the lilacs are blooming a little eariler up there than usual. I know the ceanothus by us in East County usually blooms in mid-March, but this year, it bloomed in February and was all gone by March.

And in April/May, the lupines and other wildflowers start blooming in the Lagunas too. There's a really huge field of purple flowers every year near the Stonewall Peak. The flowers look a little like lupines but they tower over my head. I don't know what they are, but they are incredible!

We went out to Cabrillo Point to watch the schooner regatta and it was bursting with bloom. The flowers are also magnificent along Sea World Drive but I didn't have time to stop and take pictures yesterday. Maybe next week!

I can't see them, either.

Rosie, yes, the mustard is fabulous this year! Even our East County canyon slopes are full of it. Fun to think that the mustard seeds were brought over by the (original) Padres...We also noticed that the wild lilacs were in bloom at the Mission Gorge pass through Mission Trails one day, and gone the next. What happened? One day with 88 degrees, and they wilted?

Catwarmer, lovely pics!
