Hello, can someone tell me which airport one would probably want to fly into in order to avoid the worst traffic problems? Our destination is Oceanside, but we will fly into the airport and rent a car. Does one offer a better commute than the other? We would fly in on a weekday and out again during the week.

Thanks.

Google says an hour and 20 minutes from LAX (Santa Ana) to Oceanside, and 40 minutes from Oceanside to San Diego. Either way, what will make the trip easier would be if you could avoid rush hour traffic.

Thank you. I had checked Google too and read that, but I've been told that the drive is much worse from San Diego than it is Santa Ana, even with rush hour. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Also, isn't the Santa Ana airport the John Wayne Airport rather than LAX?

Oh - sorry! As Santa Ana is the John Wayne (I thought it was in Irvine) then my time to LAX doesn't count. It would be only 50 minutes, so approximately the same distance as from San Diego. The drive from San Diego is urban or suburban all the way. From Santa Ana to Oceanside goes through Camp Pendleton for the smaller half, and so traffic might not be as congested there. But from Irvine down through San Clemente, it will be equally congested.

Any chance you could fly into Palomar Airport?

Thanks so much for the info, oddstray. I am not aware of Palomar Airport. I guess I'll have to check into that.

Thanks again.

United flies into Palomar airport. The city is "Carlsbad".

if Carlsbad doesn't work - I'd say John Wayne has the advantage in the afternoon rush - both the same distance, but OC has a toll road that lets you bypass the worst congestion for $5.
