Long story short, we might be moving to San Diego because of a military move and are trying to see areas to live in/around San Diego. Here's what we are looking for.

Our BAH is $2400 a month, but I'd like to keep it around $2000 if possible. We have no kids, 3 small dogs and would like a place with a fence and a house...not a condo or apartment.

Also, I'd like to keep my commute under 30 minutes. I'll be working at the Coast Guard base on harbor Dr. and would ideally like it to be even less (15 minutes), but I hear traffic in San Diego is pretty horrible, so who knows.

Any help would be appreciated!

They have a few that will fit into your budget listed on Craigslist, I was looking last night I'm looking to move into a house from an apartment and I found several in your budget price. In areas that I know are good areas, I.e. Chula Vista and Spring Valley (which is where I live now). So go to there and look under apts/house and even to the margins on the right click real estate and scroll down until you see for rent. I put a number in my phone that I'm looking for so as soon as I can remember the companies name I will send it to you. I hope this helps you!!

What would I be looking at for commute times for either of those areas?

Do you have children in school? I am guessing no since you did not mention it. Rolando Park is a San Diego neighborhood that has single family homes with fenced yards and it is closer in than Spring Valley. It's an older neighborhood of 1950s tract homes. You might check what rents are like there. School is not highly rated so I would not recommend it if you are enrolling children. Rolando Park is close to Frwy 94 and College Avenue. The commute to the base would be 10.5 miles, supposedly a 15 minute drive. Don't know how that would change during heavy commute times. I know from the parking garage I use at the airport to my driveway is 15 minutes and that is not far from the base.

I would check out Allied Gardens. Close access to 15 South, mostly single family, just checked Craigslist, the rents were 90% in your range.
