My boyfriend and I will be moving to San Diego in about 6 - 8 months and want a nice and affordable area to live in. I lived in Mira Mesa for a minute awhile back so somewhere in that vicinity would be nice. Somewhere where there's not TOO MUCH crime (i know it's hard), stores within walking distance, farmers markets and affordable. Under 1000 would be ideal but I know it's difficult. Thanks for suggestions!

Poway: the area along Poway Road would be my recommendation. Check out Carriage Hills for example.

Poway has an enormous range of housing options from 400-500k to 6.5M (North of Espola), plus you can benefit from excellent schools and low crime almost anywhere you live in the city.

The Farmer's Market is held in the area near the Poway Train Park every Saturday morning (Midland Road).

There is also alot of employment in the area scattered throughout both Rancho Bernardo (92128/92127) and Poway (92064).

Very nice community feel as well.

What? You consider that affordable living unless the OP has that kind of income upon moving to San Diego! I don't think that is even near to what the topic is all about! Let's be realistic what is affordable based on a low to medium income or if one is retired and on a fixed income from $60k to $100k a year combined with spouse's income or pension! Retired people too sometimes have to relocate where it's safe and affordable to live!
I grew up in Northern and Southern California my entire adult life and it isn't cheap in California anymore even though the economy there has recovered somewhat! That's why we sold everything, packed up and move overseas when I retired! Even if we wanted to move back to California, it's still too expensive there to do so on my retired fixed income! Anyway, we're set in our ways and we plan to stay put for now!

Here you go Jennifer! Just your typical modern westernized suburban lifestyle in the Philippines, but not for the average lifestyle of the ordinary Filipino living on minimum wage!
We have retired friends and neighbors from the local area, U.S., UK, Korea and Canada.
The Philippines isn't for everyone for those who have never been here! One just have to take extended vacations to different countries of their choices to get an idea of what the lifestyle, culture and environment may be in order to get the feel, if it's for you or not!

Here's an example of a basic entry level home in Poway: 12615 Orohaven Ln, Poway, CA 92064 | MLS# 120044445 | Redfin

Yes, Poway is hotter than the coast, but I have lived in Texas, so heat is relative. Inland also enjoys alot more sunshine than the coast, which is trapped in overcast till about 1pm for most of the year. I can afford both, I choose inland based on the communities I have access to as a parent of 3 little ones and proximity to the tech industry.

Art2ro - The original poster did not mention that he/she was retiring. Completely different scenario. To be honest, purchasing a home in retirement makes little sense unless your income level requires that you have a write off. If you want to buy in retirement, then Rancho Bernardo has some areas with 55+ deed restrictions (these homes are typically discounted 20% over comparable non-restricted comps). For retirement and close proximity to San Diego and LA, I like the French Valley, just outside Murietta, CA. You can buy brand new homes in the 200s in that area, and it's an ok place to live. 30 year fixed at 3.125% (Monthly payment under $1000). In addition, after 55 years old in California there is a proposition or two that allows deferral of property taxes until your estate passes hands.

At the end of the day, if you are looking for reasons to vacate San Diego and reside overseas, then you will probably be able to come up with a few.

I can't imagine living anywhere else at this point in my life.
