It's a booster term. Chamber of Commerce horse****. Read Babbit by Sinclair Lewis for a glimpse into that world.

And real estate developers. Back in the late 1800's / early 1900's, they started calling it the Orange Empire, marketing it to people back in the snow and ice. Dunno how or when it changed to Inland ....

In Huntington Beach, a new wave of resentment revives '909er' stereotype

According to Orange County's beach communities, 909er refers to "'Jersey Shore' style" clothing, meth addicts, white kids who wear cut-off jerseys and motocross gear and "try to act like tough guys", and young people absorbed with dirt-bike gear and lifted trucks.

When the 909 area code was created in 1992, it quickly gained a negative reputation. "The 909" was used on TV shows and by comedians as shorthand for a low-class community.

Does anyone knnow of a map that would define the Inland Empire cities? I have been reading the Victor Valley News group on Facebook and seems like they have many bad accidents out there. Doesn't sound like a place I would want to live.

There is so set agreement on what defines the IE. Some people include the high desert communities such as V'ville and Hesperia, some include the low desert cities in the Coachella, and some do don't include any of the desert communities while others include both.

I usually refer to the area east of the 15, south and west of the San Bernardino mountain range as the Inland Empire. I do not include the high desert communities, the mountain communities, Riverside County or Palm Springs as part of the Inland Empire.
