Their modem. I think I will call them again tonight to give them one more opportunity to make things right. What I noticed aboout their speedtest was the server was a TW server in Austin. So I am guessing the test is ran only through their own network to their server. AT&T U-Verse looks attractive, but the only thing I am concerned with is I don't have any phone lines ran to my house. Doesn't AT&T run over phone lines? If so I am guessing they would charge me to run a phone line to my house.

If AT&T already has the infrastructure in place to serve your address, and it's just a matter of running a line from their tap to your house, then no, there shouldn't be a charge for for running a line and installing a NID (gray box) on the outside wall of your house.

As far as interior wiring, the customer owns and maintains that portion, so if that portion isn't there either, AT&T will usually run those lines also, but there might be an installation charge. If you have existing Cat5 or coaxial cable already in your house, they will generally just use that, instead. I don't think there is an installation charge for U-verse IF you get a bundled package. I think internet-only customers get charged for installation, whether they have the necessary wiring in place or not.

My ping times were 25, 26 and 27 ms. I rebooted the modem and my computer, and did three more tests. My download speeds are now 2.33 Mbps, 2.56 Mbps and 2.52 Mbps. My upload speeds were still pretty consistent at .97 Mbps. My ping times were also consistent at 27 ms. So instead of getting a speed increase of up to 50%, I got a speed decrease of over 60%. Gee thanks Time Warner, don't give me any more gifts like this in the future please.
Same happened to me. So glad I pay over $50 a month for this garbage.

Doing this slowed down my speeds as well.

Well, at least I'm not the only one that was negatively affected by this. I did call TW again last night, and the tech I got this time seemed a little more knowledgeable. He first had me do a speed test, at a totally different TW speedtest site. It came back at just over 4 (again higher than what speedtest.net reports). He said that was rather low, so he reset my modem and had me test again. This time it came back at less than 1. He said that was all he needed to see, there must be a line problem, so a tech is coming to my house on Monday to check it out.

Oh, and this morning the TW site (speedtest.texas.rr.com/) is reporting my download speed at 5.77 and speedtest.net shows it at 3.16.

When I tried to tell them it was the modem that was the problem they wanted to roll a truck. I told them not to do that and I drove to the local office and said "they told me to exchange this". They swapped it out and never batted an eye.

Instead of starting a new thread, can anyone tell me what the latest brand/model DVR Time Warner is using? Mine are at least 5-6 years old and I'm wondering if there are newer/better units I can swap mine out for.

TWC has been using both Pace and Scientific Atlanta (now Cisco owned) boxes since the dawn of time. Most folks had the Explorer 8300 series (HD, HDC) in San Antonio. I'm not sure if TWC here is rolling out the new Cisco-branded boxes (8640HDC, 8642HDC, and 8742HDC) which work with TWC's navigator software.

Thanks BN.

I've got the Scientific Atlanta 8240HDC. I guess I'll stop by there and see if they have any better boxes coming out soon. Ever since they changed the Guide a few months back, our DVR boxes have been acting up.
