I'm moving to Rochester in mid-July and looking for a good place to live (I know, this topic has been hashed out to the death but what the hell, I'll give it a shot). My main concern is safety - I'm a pretty small young woman with an affinity for late night entertainment. I've been looking into districts to live in, NotA, Park Ave, East End, South Wedge, and St. Paul quarter specifically. I'd like to be in a fairly active area, lots of culture, entertainment, general hang out spots, the funkier the better and preferably animal friendly. Suggestions? I'd also appreciate the names of good rental companies and ones to avoid.
If you were caught by the last half of my post title and hail from the land of badgers and beer, I'm looking for a place similar to Willy Street or the Capitol loop - young professional/grad students (I don't mind undergrad presence by any means though), diverse and fun but not quite the frat bar scene (i.e. not State Streetesque). Are there any terrace-like areas in Rochester?
And of course, if you have any suggestions for fun activities or places to meet new people, send them my way. Thanks guys!
You could find a nice or decent apartment in the city in the SE section. Watch out for old homes which are not insulated well/have old windows, as your utility bills will be killer during the winter time (no doubt you're aware of this coming from Madison).
Park Ave (closer to Alexander side of the neighborhood) and southwedge are probably the closest areas to what you are looking for. I would recommend staying east of South Avenue from a safety perspective if you are considering southwedge.
Swillburg might also work, as well as some of the 19th Ward.
