That is one thing about Rochester - the quality of the neighborhood in terms of safety can change very quickly. 2-3 miles can be a big difference. You do not want to live in the area around Rochester General Hospital.
You've gotten some great advice here. In terms of safety and quality of schools, I would recommend in this order: West Webster, West Irondequoit, East Irondequoit. (In Irondequoit, the farther north of Ridge Road, the better.)

Good luck!
Yes, but West Webster doesn't have the World Famous House of Guitars......
You will find that rents in Rochester are considerably more modest than in Seattle (a little less so in the suburbs than in the city). The parts of the city near Rochester General but east of Culver Road remain pretty safe if city living is your preference. I understand that Francis parker and henry Hudson are both pretty good city elementary schools and both are nearby. You can rent a nice two bedroom apartment in that part of the city, with off-street parking and a lot of amenities for in the $600 to $700 range and you will be walking distance to shopping, banks, convenience stores, etc.

With all due respect, I don't agree that part of the city near Rochester General is pretty safe. I think that the area around Norton Street, right around the corner from the hospital, which may have been OK 10-20 years ago, has continued to deteriorate, albeit slowly. And if you go south of Norton St by even a small distance, it gets bad really fast. I have friends that lived in that area and know what the neighborhood was like when they moved in compared to how it was when they moved out ... went downhill. I also lived near the North Goodman St area for a number of years before moving to Webster. Even that area looks more run down than when I lived there. I just would not recommend this area ... there are so many better options that are not that far away that are dramatically better in terms of safety and schools.
