I just moved into an apartment without being required to sign a lease. I like this because I am not obligated to stay for any minimum amount of time. I believe if a person hates where he/she lives, he should be able to move. Many ppl I have known have been forced to live a place they disliked because the lease agreement was for a minimum 1 or 2 years. I understand that there are certain advantages to signing a lease. How do you guys feel about lease agreements as renters?

It has its advantages and disadvantages. Since you did not sign a lease that means that your on a month to month occupancy and the LL has 30 days to kick you out if they want.

Yeah, only 30 days to decide if your LL likes you or not.

Also those who pay month to month usually pay at a higher rate.

Not too reassuring to know that at any moment you could only have 30 days or less to vacate in diificult to find a place under normal circumstances NYC not to mention crazy as hell LLs. And you trust them?

Yup, and they you have to find another place and buy boxes, rent a u-haul, change your mailing address, update your info with all your credit card companies, job, social security, etc. A lot of hassle if you ask me.

Why not research the area where you are thinking about living in before signing a lease?

Month-to-month is fine.
I was on a lease but since it expired we are now on a month-to-month basis.

I'm fine with having 30 days to look for a place, you really dont need more than that when looking for another place.

Your situation is different and usually the case when someone who doesn't want to sign another lease goes to month to month but he's going into it right off the bat, unless there are extinuating circumstances people don't usually look for a month to month expecting to stay long-term.
