I honestly don't think I could date a woman that is not the literary type. My ex-wife and my girlfriend both have literature degrees, and most of my significant exes were writers, psychologists, or lawyers, professions which demanded very precise use of language. If my girlfriend misspelled a word in a note to me I would assume that she did it on purpose to give something in the phrase a double meaning or to make a pun.
In fact, my girlfriend and I often send each other text messages in Latin or Spanish, just to mix things up. She gives me a bit of a hard time if I make a Spanish grammatical mistake, and I do the same if she botches the Latin. I don't think I could handle communicating with someone that is either too lazy or too uninformed to properly use their native language.
I know that I am more of a stickler than most when it comes to grammar, but I was not always this way. Years of grading student theses, being the editor of a journal, and writing book chapters for textbooks have given me an appreciation for clear communication style and expressive writing. I just don't think I could date someone when all I want to do is write a big 'F' in red pen at the top of their note to me.
ROFL, calm down, and come to the "I Can't Take It Anymore" thread on the Writing forum. It's a place for people like us. We've addressed not only that mess, but the advice/advise thing, the lose/loose thing, the their/there/they're thing, and have moved on to the even more astounding, "I-can't-believe-this" words and phrases we've found on City-Data, such as "pre-Madonna" for "prima donna" and "swats sticker" for--well, you know, that Nazi symbol.
Oh my gosh... I think that'll be enough to strike me dead! LOL
I spell fine, I have trouble with sentence structure despite a decent vocabulary though. My weakness. I agree with the poster above unless it's simple words i would not hold it against someone.
Meh, I'm texting my husband and friends and they text back the same way.
That's fine. My friends care for spelling and grammar, and I'm the same way. My best friend is also an English major, so there's that. lol
