I get annoyed when this discussion comes up: so how many people have you had sex with/slept with? It's almost as if people make fun of you if you've been with say 4 or less. It's like you're expected to play the field these days. People who only want to be with one person are seen as quaint and old-fashioned, even if some people think it's sweet, they're secretly thinking 'I could never do that.'

It's as if, if you haven't slept with at least 5 before you're 30 there's something wrong with you. It's expected that relationships won't last long (people act surprised if they last more than a 5 years) and you'll move on.

I dont know that society looks down on that, but there is a double standard based on sex of the person you are talking about. For most men, it seems that less sexual partners a woman has had, the more attractive she becomes. Its exactly opposite for most women, or so Ive read and heard. Ive had very few sexual partners, 5 or 6 and am a male in my thirties. Not much into one night stands, and thanks to my (seemingly outdated by todays standards) morals and values, I have never cheated on my SO, nor have I ever accepted sometimes very strong advances from GFs and wifes of peole I know.

It's not a contest

And as with golf scores, a lower number is better

If you're a guy, yes. (based on observation, feel free to dispute )

Personally I see nothing wrong with someone having few sexual partners. Besides, it's really none of anyone's business, unless that person's your doctor lol.

Maybe Americans are slightly more conservative in that respect, but that's the prevailing attitude among Aussies and Brits. Applies to women as well as men.

I don't think so. I am not into the promiscuous life so I'd prefer to be with someone who has not been with dozens of women. Those who "look down" on people who have standars, values, and respect for their bodies and health are not the kind of people I want to be associated with so their opinions don't matter to me.

Definitely, I'd rather have one or two great relationships, with great sex, rather than a string of average relationships, even if the sex was great. My life isn't based around sex, like a lot of people.

They don't necessarily look down on you, but it seems like people think their is something wrong with you if you've had either zero or very few sexual partners. I'm a virgin and I've heard the "You must be unattractive/ugly" excuse more times than I can count.
