I drive from Cobblestone to Durham every day. It takes us about 40-45 minutes. If you leave by 6:15, you wont hit hardly any traffic at all. We actually have a carpool (which helps on gas) and we leave at 6:10, back in Clayton by 4:45. There are alot of carpools in the area, maybe you can find one for that long 12 hour shift it looks like you might have.
I think there's a way to take Covered Bridge to I-540, but you'll have to get back on I-40 eventually so its really not a shortcut. I think theres a way to get to I-40 from around the Riverwood area, but I'm not sure. Honestly, traffic is not that bad at all. If you leave after 7am, then you will hit the stop & go traffic everyone seems to love so much!
