I'm already getting lots of weeds in my yard. Will the upcoming freezing temps kill them off or do I need to look for a weed killer that works in cold weather?

We have The Weed Man come out a few times a year and they put down pre-emergent and spot with weed killer any that make it through the pre-emergent. My lawn has never been as weed free and green during the summer as it is after using them for a whole season.

I am just starting back up with EPM. The guy told me pre-emergent applications start next week. We have zoysia and can really see the green weeds. You can get a calendar from Super-sod or NCSU for when to apply the correct thing: weed, fertilizer, lime, etc.

The upcoming cold should do a number on them, but I would also put out pre-emergent around Valentines days.

What you are seeing are what are called "winter annuals". These are weeds that germinate in late fall and grow slowly during the winter except when there is a warm spell. Here is a little booklet with many that are found in NC: TurfFiles:Keywords:WINTER ANNUAL WEED

There is even a little grass called annual bluegrass that has short, thin leaves in a clump.

The good thing is that as soon as it gets pretty warm in the spring, the winter annuals will die -- but not until they have produced and scattered seed for next year. If you use pre-emergent herbicides now, they won't affect these winter annuals. That is why it is better to wait until the soil temp reaches about 50 degrees.

I've got a ton of Henbit.

Turffiles:Weeds:Henbit

I tried Roundup this past weekend when it was nice and warm, but I don't think that I got it good enough.

Anyone else have problems with the weed that looks like Japanese Stiltgrass? I think that's what it is. It's a summer weed, and spreads very quickly. I didn't have any in my yard the first year I was in this house. But each year it's gotten worse, and I go out and spray it every summer, several times. It's extremely invasive, will grow under shrubs and in shade, and will choke out other plants f you don't pull it up.

I've been fighting a stiltgrass invasion for several years now. I somehow manage to eradicate it by the end of each summer, only to see it return every spring because rain spreads the seeds from up the hill into my yard. There's an herbicide called Ornamec that's supposed to work, but I haven't tried it yet; still relying on good ol' Roundup.

Henbit is what I have the most of and it's in the yard so I don't want to try Roundup. I've used Weed B Gone to kill it in the past but that's always been in the early spring so I don't know how effective it would be with cooler temperatures. It's supposed to be used when daytime temperatures are above 45 so i may try it.
