my last child will be entering college next september. my husband and i would like to move out of new york down to nc. we are in our early 50s, still working, jewish and active. suggestions where to live? my husband and i will still be working (not ready for retirement) -- he'll transfer; i will look for work; we don't want a retirement community but a place where we can meet other people our age; we like having a downtown environment to visit but we are used to having our own home -- a townhouse community might be a good option.

Like the Shao Lin priest said to the Kung Fu apprentice, "The answer is within you, Grasshopper."
Or some bilge like that...

Judy,
You just won't have the same lifestyle, but you can have a lot of fun, and relaxation, too.

What change will you want? Would you prefer to live in a
Downtown Condo in a glitzy tower, full-blown country, or McMansion in a sea of McMansions?

As you read this board, you will see people professing their love for all the towns in the Triangle. I take that as evidence that we have a broad range of pleasant choices to offer. So once you accept that you won't be in NY, you can select from a broad range of workable options.

Good luck, and if you can narrow it down a little, ask away. It is easy to get good input here.

Alot depends on what exactly your looking for, what you would do for work unless you really plan to retire when you move, etc. I am in mid 40's with my wife and we are trying to sell here in NY (not easy) and have a home we purchased in Clayton back in May. We wanted more open spaces, larger lot size, tree's and nicer environment in general and liked what we saw in Clayton. I am jewish, my wife is not, but religion isn't a major factor for us. Not sure if it is to you. While there might be a synogogue or 2 around, there probably isn't any major areas I am aware of that are primarily jewish (not sure if thats a factor at all for you). You might want to give a few more parameters of what you are looking for in terms of plans, wishes, type of home / area, price range that your looking to find, etc.

I'm sure many folks out there have some good info for you.

Good luck
