I have a buddy who lives in Charlotte and I live in Raleigh. We're looking to take our families (Him: wife and 2 small kids / Me: just wife) camping and we were hoping to meet somewhere in the middle. We would like to find a place on a lake preferably but also relatively secluded (I would be happy if we didn't see anyone all weekend), but I know we have to meet in the middle, especially with 2 small kids. Any ideas? I'm not really sure where to look. Thanks for help.

Uwharrie NF is a great recommendation; Dan Nicholas Park in Rowan County is another option. You'll see people at both places though. Seclusion and family camping in the NC piedmont don't exactly go hand-in-hand.

Jordan Lake has camping, but you will see people on a weekend.

I second this! Plenty of spots around Badin Lake. Plus, if you do have the desire to get out and about, the NC Zoo is not too awful far away.

Uwharrie NF is a great recommendation.

I personally favor Hanging Rock State Park. It has a mountain feel to it with climbs and water falls. And it's about equal distance from each location. About 2hrs 20 minutes.

Morrow Mountain is in the same general location as Uwharrie, and has the benefit of being one of 2 state parks with cabins. . . . depending on your definition of "camping"

No question, hands down your top pick should be Stone Mountain near Sparta!

No lake, but there is a beautiful rushing trout stream

The campground has level sites and a new bath house with hot showers. Not a lot of privacy, but that is almost impossible to find in any campground I'm afraid. Though if no groups are using it, you could possibly camp in the group camping area and have more privacy.

The hiking is awesome and there is a beautiful waterfall there too.

Sparta is not at all between Charlotte and Raleigh, though.

I vote for the Uwharries.

Lake Norman State Park would be an option (closer to Charlotte though)

Campground Details - Lake Norman State Park, NC - North Carolina State Parks

Pilot Mountain has the Yadkin river, but no lake. Nice scenery, and good hiking though.
