My wife and I like to backpack and primitive camp (ie, not at campgrounds). Any suggestions within 1.5 hours of Raleigh? We would even consider drive up campsites that are just not within a big campsite. Thanks for your suggestions!

Eno River State Park in Durham has several quasi-primitive camp sites. Each site has a tent pad, and there are a half dozen sites clustered about 100 ft apart, set in the woods. There's an outhouse near each cluster. Sites are 0.5-1.5 miles away from the parking lot, and in the case of the Cox mountain sites on the opposite side of the Eno (there's a swinging footbridge you cross). The cox mountain trail is pretty decent hike to boot.

So, not true primitive camping, but a pretty awesome resource to be located so close to town.

Falls Lake and Umstead also has some quasi-primitive camping.

Smile US Forest Service

You might want to try this link for the US Forest Service. They have a list of dispersed camping areas.

National Forests in North Carolina - Camping & Cabins

I know I used the forest service site for camping ideas for here in AZ. We have a lot more national forests here though.
