We are considering moving to the Raleigh/Cary/Holly Springs/Apex areas from Massachusetts and have a young daughter with Down Syndrome. She is very high functioning and is currently in an integrated school here in MA. I am trying to get an understanding of which towns and specifically which elementary schools encourage integration of kids with special needs into typically developing classrooms and are good at providing services. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

I'm so glad to see you asked this question, but sad there are no replies. I too am looking to move in that area from the NE. I have a son with autism. Please let me know what you have found out since your post. I hope you were able to get some good info on schools. I would also like to have my son in a typical school who can give him the extra help he needs. Seems the school in the NE are big on inclusion. Not sure about the schools down south.

The schools systems are set up by county as opposed to by town as it is in in the north east. So I am going to guess that in regards to special education, it should be fairly even across the board. You could check out the WCPSS website to see if you can find your answers there, or find someone to contact. I hope this helps. I have a child with special needs and the school has been doing a great job with him and keeping him learning and happy to learn.
