I'm just so happy that I'm old and will be dead before too long.
It's been getting worse for 40 years and it's going to get worse ever year forward.

Oh, it's not getting worse. Sure, we're experiencing some social growing pains as we try to heal from the wounds of history, but it's nothing like as bad as it used to be.
All people in the U.S. can vote without violence. People are not routinely lynched while their murderers go unpunished. Women are going to college in numbers equal to and greater than men. Stalking, drunk driving, domestic violence, child abuse, etc. are much more widely accepted as crimes and are enforced as such. Just a few (random) examples, but the world is becoming a better and better place all the time.
If I saw things the way you described them, I'd probably feel the same way you do.
When I lived on Long Island the school nurse asked us to make sure our kids had lip balm because their lips would get chapped when they went outside to play. JC would be horrified!
I think that one thing that may be overlooked is that part of the reason they are requiring parents to write notes is because other parents are filing complaints saying that their kids are getting sick after sharing lip balm with other kids, and demanding to know why the teachers aren't being more attentive surrogate parents for them. They may be doing this to get those people to shut up

Yeah you are right but the Nanny State is forcing the Nanny School. Probably more of an issue with gloss and not balm. http://www.pkids.org/ip_personal.php
It's kind of funny, I have two kids in JoCo schools and I don't have a problem with it. Maybe it is a silly rule, but if my kids get chapped lips I will send in a note along with chap the stick. No big deal.
I guess it's easy to overlook the small things when we are quite satisfied with our childrens' lesrning environment.

I wondered this too. What happened to parents taking responsibility for their kids and making their kids accountable. If my child gets sick from sharing something, I'll remind them of how it happened and to suck it up and not do it again. I wouldn't be calling to give the teachers a hard time. They are educators, not babysitters. Still, I think banning it in reaction to parents complaining wasn't necessary. Each time they cave in to demands like this they (school) lose ground and take on more responsibility to police our kids. I feel for them.
