My turn to ask for advice. My husband has a desktop that runs on Win 2000 Pro. It is making bad sounds and as all of us know hard drives do not last forever. I would like to find a place that can replace the drive (incl os) and do maintenance on whatever needs it. Recommendations appreciated.

FWIW, I haven't been posting much recently because my arm is in a cast.

Sorry about your arm, Nell. I hope it's better soon. If Bluesmama doesn't see this I would recommend her husband, Merlin, of "Computer Magic," as a good computer repair guy. He resurrected my old machine. He is one of the last of the computer repair people to make house calls and And I guarantee you some lively conversation thrown in to boot.

If you are interested, you can PM Bluesmama or I can give you his number.

Bad noises are not necessarily the hard drive. It could be a fan bearing going out.

If it has a floppy disk drive, those go out frequently and make a horrible racket. Unplug the 3.5 diskette drive and see if that cures the noise.

When I read vintage, I kept thinking 90's era or even Commodore 64/Apple II type. Not Windows 2000

It is Dell PW 5330. The hd is due to die, better have it mirrored before it shows signs of imminent disaster. Hd's of that generation are out of production.

Yes, it could be the fan. Doubtless it needs cleaning at least. We replaced it once and had a problem finding a replacement that fit.

DH runs a version of AutoCad that isn't compatible with more recent versions of Windows. To upgrade would be VERY expensive.

[For several years the Victor computer club met at my house, I did a stint as the Pres.]

It is in the hands of a former Tektronix technician, my kind of guy!

I'm typing on a 10 year old Dell Inspiron 9100. The hard drive went out a couple years ago, and I was able to find a replacement IDE drive online, twice as large, for a very reasonable price. It's an XP system, so drive size was not an issue.

I have a couple of Window's 7 Pro PC's, but I depend on several Widows XP machines for most of what I do. I even keep a Win3.11 machine alive because I own the Machine Control Software on it (Allen Bradley and Mitsubishi), and it won’t run on anything else. I did discover that my Netbook with Win 7 needed the ram doubled to run some of my Amateur Radio software, and I think this XP SP3 Laptop needs more than 500mb of ram with all the ads that run on some websites. I also have a CP/M and a DOS Machine around that I start every now and then. And I keep my Commodore 128 too. If anyone really needs boards or drives for older PC’s let me know. I have about 50 of them still and I threw about 100 out and about a dozen computers.
