Hi Folks,

There are two types of food places I'm looking for in the Portland area (within 25 mile radius):
1) Traditional old-fashioned diners, preferably the "real deal" with classic stainless steel 1930's - 1950's styling, soda fountain, etc. Vintage old style drive-ins, also.
2) Places that serve hot dogs (including foot longs) and burgers that are char-grilled.
If you know of food places like this in the Portland area, could you please let me know about them.

Thanks for your help.

There is only one of the traditional type diners you're looking for that I know of in the Portland Area. That is on TV highway in Aloha. Called the Blue Moon Diner. The food is nothing special unfortunately, I went once several years ago and never bothered to go back.

Portland's diners in that era tended to be first floor in permanent buildings. I'm not sure if that was building code or because space was cheap. We did have quite a few drive-in's but so many have been taken over by McDonald's or were torn down long ago. A few still remain, Skyline being one of the most famous.

I don't know if SkyLine has a flame grill, but they have some of the best Shakes in town.

There are (were) a couple of Annie's locations, one used to be across from the Rescue Shelter, and another is also on TV highway. They look pretty dingy but the one across from the shelter supposedly had some good food. I haven't driven that way in a couple of years so I don't know if they're open still.

The Portland Food Blog had reviews of the best Hamburgers in Portland, and my impression was that a couple of those were Drive-In type places.

Skyline, Fuller's for authentic diner style; Burgerville for retro diner style.

Other than that, my experience is in the South-East section of town:

Mike's Drive-In, in Sellwood is a pretty classic sort of place. Roake's in Jennings Lodge for Coney's and foot longs - not sure how they're cooked, though. Tebo's in Gladstone for good, old-fashioned grilled hamburgers & hot dogs served cafeteria style with a condiment bar.

Don't forget Lew's Drive-in (Dairy Freeze) on McLoughlin for Coney Island dogs, Ice Cream and such.

They sponsor a great Hot Rod Cruise-in in September also.

Fresh Grill, across from Washington Square Mall, char-grills everything and it's all delicious.

Cruise-in (Cruise In Country Diner | Homepage) is always worth a visit. It's a bit of a drive out in the country but a pretty drive and not hard to find. Farmington (10) and SW River intersection.

Ehh.... I've never eaten at the one in Beaverton, but I have the one in Hood River a couple of times. It's OK, not a place I'd go out of my way for.
