How about this:

We have a lot of people in jail for crimes that are not "serious", per se. Why not export them to a location that allows them to serve their sentence away from friends and family, while at the same time freeing up our jails for real criminals?

So basically, white collar crimes (with the exception of Madoff-level crimes), fraud, forgery, tax evasion, etc...all of the crimes where someone wasn't physical hurt, basically. Send them here:

The Glory of Carniola

Disclaimer: While this post has its roots in sarcasm, the problem is real, and isolating them in a foreign, possibly hostile country might work wonders on some of these people.

I'd prefer a Tent City like in Arizona and inmates working hard on a chain gang. If it costs 40K on average per year to feed and house them let's get some bang for our buck in terms of contributions through working on municipal projects and etc.

I agree that the punishments for various types of crime are weird in relation to one another. I have never understood why tax evaders etc. go to jail. They are people who usually can support themselves and shouldn't be fed and housed by society. Attach electronic cuffs on their feet and let them work off their debts.

When someone gets a longer sentence for a money crime than, say, a rapist, then the sense of justice might get lost.

Just deport all the non-citizen criminals back to their own country and that would reduce the prison population by at least 30-35%.

the movement to decriminalize crime is facinating. astounding in my short lifetime since 1948 i would see this happen.
the substance of the movement is pealing the artichoke, removing what is "
"non serious" crime-- piece by piece, to find out except for a tiny morsel in the center- there is no such thing as serious crime.
happy easter

We need more drug courts (and in many states need to reform drug laws in general), fewer privatized prisons, definitely need fewer Joe Arpaios.

As much as I hate to admit it. Some drugs like pot need to legalized, and controlled and taxed. Many speak of the military/industrial complex, in truth we spend nearly as much on the narco/law enforcement complex....Taking the profit out of weed will slow or even stop lots of crime
