According to the MSNBC article, the prom she attended was the official one sanctioned by the school, which had administrative chaperones there. If the parents and kids decided to have a private affair, after she made an issue of the official one, that is their right and they can invite...or not, whoever they want.

"They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them," McMillen says...."The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to."

Wow, these parents are just fabulous role models, aren't they?
it is a VERY sad statement about the type of people who reside in Miss. sorry to the tolerant folks who live in the South and specifically Miss., but it stories like this is showing it to be, more and more, a state decades behind the norm. here's hoping this young girl will move away from such an intolerant place and realize that people like the ones at her school are FAST becoming the minority

Around here, girls go together and boys go together in groups. These two girls could have gone together without any uproar if they'd been smart about it. They probably had to rub everyone's nose in their "gayness".

Yep. Better include California, NJ and Maine in there as well as backward states filled with neanderthals, or any other of the 31 states that have banned gay marriages.

That's ridiculous; there shouldn't be a need for these girls to 'be smart about it' - it shouldn't be an issue in the first place! They are no more 'rubbing everyone's nose in their gayness' than a straight couple is when they buy tickets to prom as a couple. Gay couples should be able to buy tickets as a couple and attend prom as a couple without it being a 'big deal.' The school should have simply allowed it just as they would a straight couple, the school didn't need to turn it into an issue. Gay people such as myself aren't seeking to 'rub our gayness' in people's faces, we're simply trying to be treated like everyone else!

Personally, I want to be able to go to a restaurant or a bar with my boyfriend, as a couple, and do the same things that straight couples do without being stared at or feeling threatened. I want no more than that which every straight couple already has; the right to be comfortable with my significant other in any social setting, in public. If a straight couple can hold hands while taking a stroll in the park without anyone caring, a gay couple should be able to do the same. If a straight couple can dance closely at prom without being gawked at, a gay couple should be able to do the same. Period. Gay couples who want this aren't 'impinging' on anyone's rights, we are simply wanting to be treated the same as any straight couple.

Ridiculous. All they tried to do was attend the prom together. How does that equate to "rubbing everyone's nose in their gayness"? That's quite a heterosexist point of view that you're expressing. Do you realize that?

who the heck is talking about gay marriage? can you manage to stick w/ the topic here? I'm talking about a state where there are schools, even in the 2st century, having segregated proms. a story like this didn't surprise me at all, sadly. the states you mention pale in comparison to Miss., in terms of their levels of tolerance. there are different levels of tolerance, different steps. some places have chosen to be very tolerant and taken the ultimate step to allow gay marriage. some states are making strides, even if they are smaller, in the direction of complete tolerance. it seems like Miss. has barely attempted to lift a foot to take a step in the direction of tolerance.

What does banning gay marriage have to do with allowing a same-sex couple to attend a prom? Nothing.

Your bigotry is showing again, dear.

I agree with you, but she "demanded to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo". This is a school and she was about bucking the system and rubbing everyone's nose in it, more than just wanting to go with her girlfriend.

there was no "demanding". she did the right thing and tried to ask permission first. and seriously, what's the big deal about a girl wearing a tux to the prom? what, will poor children's mind be warped beyond repair and the world come to an end? there's no nose rubbing involved, just two girls wanting to go to a prom and an intolerant school board/town/state keeping them from doing so
