I know LI prices are much higher.

I'm speaking mostly for Nassau County, but I assume it is the same in the Suffolk County as well. The Town taxes can also play a role in the difference, for example the tax rate in the Town of North Hempstead tends to be quite a bit lower than the tax rates in the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town of Hempstead, with the Town of Hempstead having the largest rate. The biggest difference is the school taxes, the rates in some districts can be double what they are in others. This is especially true in communities which are mostly working to middle class, that do not have much of a luxury base or commercial base to help absorb some of the taxes. If you live in the Levittown school district (I have family that lived there till recently) its basically a double whammy, because not only are you in the Town of Hempstead (which has the highest Town tax rate), the Levittown school district also has the highest school district rate. You could easily be paying the same in taxes (or at least close to it) for a $400,000 home in Levittown that someone in a $800,000 home in Great Neck or Manhasset are paying, even though you are paying 1/2 the county taxes they are paying because of the Town and school district differences.

What you are incorrectly calling "broke" is merely a State cutting spending to match revenues. ( nothing apparently makes you happy)

[This is been yet another addition of middle school level economics for right wingers.]
Uhhh, yes, a local government can default. Just look at NYC in 1975. Ditto for Argentina.

How are the governors doing as a united front against Obamacare and Cap and Trade because of what it will cost their states? I know my conservative Democrat Governor speaks out against it and what it will cost our state but he has nothing to be afraid of from White House henchmen because he's nearing the end of his term limit. Are they offering treats to your governors to remain silent? Twisting their arm? No, Obama and minions won't raise your taxes but it will force your states to raise taxes so the governors will be the bad guys instead of Congress and the President.

Rhode Island has been there for quite some time and because no matter who the governor is the general assembly controls the state and it leaves the governor hopeless.

No, actually its because these states have some of the highest poverty rates in the country outside of the deep south,

Id say Oregon, Rhode Island and Nevada would be the next 3. North Carolina and Texas would be likely targets, but both of those states are far more likely to simply cut education or public services then a blue state. They also have far lower costs of living.

For those of you who want to say its a "blue state" thing, actually, Connecticut, New Jersey, Minnesota, Vermont and Massachussetts are some of the least likely states to go down.

No but when your average house is over 500k, is it fair to pay a kindergarden teacher 50k? Where would you expect them to even live on that? Surely not anywhere south of Bronx or east of Jersey City (although they might be able to find a small place in Bed-Stuy or Crown Heights).

You have to pay your civil servants enough to live in your city, or they simply wont take that job. Most civil servants dont expect to make a fortune, but they should be able to live where they teach, serve, or protect.

Requiring your teachers to take a two and a half hour train ride from a Bronx ghetto to get to your posh Long Island burgh and teach for 50k is rediculous.

Actually RI's biggest problem is the unions. They just had to go to the courts over pensions and state budget. The governor could not use furlow days to combat some of the problems.

Also, Massachusetts is also going broke and will be soon because of its Health Care system.

Can't have a middle class with jobs going out of this country the way they are ever since Clinton signed NAFTA. Your mistake is believing the democrats care about the middle class, they don't, they are owned by the globalist corporations and that's why you won't hear Obama bring up taking another look at NAFTA or doing anything to bring jobs back or limit massive immigration. He's just as much a puppet of the NWO as was Bush and Kennedy.
