While I don't support workingclassheros fingerpointing at certain groups, one has to understand that on LI, we are being taxed to death and paying dearly for overpriced civil servants and teachers. Does a $100K kindergarden teacher teach any better than a $50K one?

My school taxes represent 67% of my tax bill (county property tax includes police district, lighting district, sanitation district, and school tax.) I live in an area which is heavily Democratic, my parents lived in one which was traditionally Republican and ALL of our taxes have risen meteorically.

NYS is paying out excessive amounts of money in social services to citizens and non citizens alike. That is a big problem.

unions have twisted the arm of the municapalities so much that we the peopel are being taxed to death....I pay 14k in property taxes a year, 9k of it to the schools , and i still have to send 'supplies' (to include toilet paper) in to school......why to you think people are FLEEING new york in droves???? because we are taxed to death by the robbing unions and their patrinage jobs

Since you bring up the Sanitation workers and how much they make, did you vote for Kate Murray?

I do agree that in some cases unions are to blame, for instance the $437,000 payout Belesi received leaving the NCPD in 2001, for working 8 months was asinine, and we need to put an end to contracts like that.

It appears that anytime someone has an opinion that differs from your own and provides facts to back up said opinion, your standard operating procedure is to bring race into the conversation. That's pretty low class, not to mention extremely lazy.

Just out of curiosity, what percentage of fair market value are the annual property taxes on LI?

It can range anywhere from about 1.2% to 2.25%, depending on the school district, most are probably in the 1.65% to 1.85% range.

Thanks, Smash! Here in the Chicago area, we pay 1.8% to 2.5%, also depending on the school district, which collects about 3/4 of the tax bill. So, figure $9,000 or so each year on a $400,000 house, which is a very modest home in the more sought after areas. In the best neighborhoods, homes are in the multi-million dollar range. I know LI prices are much higher.
