Not the Democratic party of today. The old DixieCrats may have wanted a race war, but they are now all Republicans.
"Into the late 20th century, the South changed from a Democratic monolith to a majority Republican sector of the country with GOP gains in state legislatures. This change, which became quite evident in 1972 with the electoral success of Richard Nixon's "Southern Strategy", peaked with the elections of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and George H. W. Bush in 1988. It was consolidated in 1994 when Republicans gained a majority in the House of Representatives under the leadership of Newt Gingrich."
I think Carter was just fumbling with his choice of words and that there was no mal-intent on his part. He was talking about a black child who was able to grow grow up in this country and (at the time) run for President. This attack on him is just as bad as the attacks liberals make upon conservatives when a slip-of-the-tongue occurs. (And I'm a conservative.)
I thnik carter's boat docked when his own staff said he lied in his own book. That is why no one really cares what he says now. I do think thsi was a slip of the tongue but then he made his bed with his prior statements on race.
Carter is a terrorist-supporter, a racebaiter, a liar, a distorter of history, and represents a disastrous presidency the consequences which we are still paying for.
He's been on this earth too long. My regret is that when he finally croaks we will have to go through the ordeal of a national holiday and the phony eulogies simply because he was an ex-president. It will be ridiculous.
