The more they behave like jerks, the more people avoid them and finally they are left all on their own.

I recall one young woman in Rome - while standing in front of ruins with 3500 years of history right in front of her eyes - having nothing else to add but that she didn't like it because some waiter in a cafe didn't bother to acknowledge her presence well enough. She couldn't grasp the significance of everything that had happened over centuries on that very spot she was sitting on.

Besides, why the heck do so many american tourists YELL when they talk??? Is it really that difficult to talk in a normal tone?
Have you ever left the country. More baseless stereotypes.

I'll reopen this thread, but if the personal attacks keep coming, this will be closed for good. Please debate the topic, without attacking other posters.

Hope your husband is not offended. However, the posts that he was compelled to respond to were more a defensive response to the theme of the thread than an attack on Denmark.

The theme being, America sucks!

High taxes, and some evil socialism does not seem to be all that bad after all.
I'm sorry but vacation impressions are not worth squat. Live somewhere else for a few years then get back to us.

Denmark, the Netherlands, Scotland, and Ireland are the friendliest european countries and are nice to Americans. The Danes embrace a soft socialism, which works for them, as most Danes are not lazy bums and take some pride in labor.

If I found my way to Utopia I'd stay there. Why didn't you?

Yeah, well - organized American religion is considerably more in-your-face than the Danish state church. The entire evolution debate comes to mind.

Putting religion on the public dime has turned the clergy into civil servants who are busy jockeying for promotion and honorary knighthoods, rather than trying to change school curriculums or keep gays from marrying. This is the church that reprimanded a bishop for trying to fire a preacher who'd openly declared he didn't believe in God. (Can't do that. Religious discrimination.)

Danish lefties are a good deal more left than US lefties, btw. But there's a tradition for seeking consensus and making deals where common ground can be found.

Yeah, you better straighten up, or it's longships on the horizon for you!

Which it doesn't - I, for one, love living here. I am not, on the other hand, going to say it can't be improved. All countries have their quirks, all countries have horror stories of people being caught in the system, and there's always room for improvement. All countries (Denmark included) also have a contingent of people who consider it a personal affront if people suggest that things could somehow be improved.

I didn't see the OP as stating that America sucks.

I think it sucks in many ways, btw... religion in state issues for one thing.; extreme violence being another.

It was about the OPs impressions on visiting a new country and researching it's society and economy.

More people should ) travel and research (not listen to radio or watch TV) with the US.

Like I said upthread (as did others), America is a pretty good country;there are a lot of pretty good countries out there.

The OP just stated she enjoyed visiting another country, the plus points, and that she discovered the media was biased here and we have problems here that others may have solved better elsewhere - yet look at the aggression and hostility she got back!

This, I guess, is one of the worse things with this country. This immense narrow and petty mindedness. Because people don't travel much and don't keep well informed about much, they are not always of this. How is a people free when their own narrow mindedness keep them bound to false concepts?
