Prior to Obama taking over General Motors, most enviromentalist and some liberal snobs hated General Motors because of their poor fuel economy (enviromentalist) or poor build quality (liberal snobs). But now that Obama has taken over GM I seem to be hearing some of these same people saying we must buy GM products now. I was happy with the direction GM was going, product wise, before the government take over of GM. Their vehicles were getting better and better in both quality and fuel economy. Though the vehicles haven't changed, all of a sudden those same people want people to buy GM products when before they would burn Hummers on the dealership lots. Any new GM vehicle you see within the next 5 years will be vehicles that were in the process of being made prior to the government take over.
So, do you support GM enough to buy their vehicles or do you want others to buy their products while you continue to buy German and Japanese vehicles?

1978 Chevrolet Camaro
1984 Buick Skyhawk
1994 Chevrolet Cavalier RS sedan
2003 Chevrolet Malibu

I am by most definitions here a liberal and I owned a 94 Cavalier. I've also owned an 89 Aerostar. A 94 Honda Civic Wagon. Now I own no car at all. That is what this liberal thinks liberals should do: eschew car ownership completely. Certainly SUV's, Cargo Vans, Heavy Trucks should be on a strictly rental basis. You asked. Harley-Davidson once asked for and got government protection in the form of tarrifs on Japanese motorcycles that enabled them to become a dominant player with near cult status. This liberal see's GM pulling a lot of lobby leverage to win some market share because after reconstruction their image is shot to hell. If you were ok with their products you weren't understanding that in the 21st Century we simply do not need more Cavaliers, Skyhawks and Malibu's we need more Volt's. Many more so that they actually become competative alternatives. This is not a liberal or conservative issue.

Obama did not 'seize' GM they brought themselves to him and said, "help, please, help". What's a good President to do? Seriously. Patriots? You no more own GM than Obama does. You can't have it both ways: free enterprise when the getting is good and then run for the protection of receivership when the economy hits a slump. Was anyone threatening to pry AIG from Bush's cold dead hands? Hmmmm.

Yes I do. Once the federal government has taken over something, they rarely ever want to let go. it has to do with power and control. Both parties are guilty of being hungry for power and control. that's why I believe that even if a republican white house and republican controlled congress comes into power, they would not want to let go their hold of GM/Chrysler.
The Volt was designed and tested prior to the government take over of GM. The CEO who OKed the Volt project and production was the one Obama wanted removed from his position.

I'm don't know the exact quote, but I remember Obama saying something like, "I'm not going to run the car companies, we don't know anything about cars." Something to that effect.
They bailed them out, and told them they had to fire the CEO that helped drive them to ruin. GM seems to be doing well, and I think things will be fine.
I don't buy American because when I was growing up I had several neighbors with Dodges and Fords. One person bought 4 new Dodge cars in the time period we owned one Volvo (19 years), they replaced one about every 4-5 years when it became more expensive to repair then to buy a new one. Same period another neighbor went through 3 fords, twice where the engine seized.
I can't think of anything more disrespectful to a customer and their hard earned work product then to give them a vehicle that just breaks down every few years because its made so badly. I'll buy cars that are reliable and if American cars ever get that way I'll be right there.
