I've enver seen a comprehensive study on it (no suprise) but I do wonder how much tax revenue State and local municipalities are missing out on becasue of tax exemptions for religions.
This tax exemption, as far as I can tell through some research, appears to be only a matter of "tradition" that edged through our Nation's Founding along with other British Common Laws.
Of course if someone can explain how taxes a religious institution like everyone else is taxed is somehow NOT making an establishment of religion, or can point to the specific Tax Code prohibiting religious institutions from being taxed, I'll be glad to see it.

I remember when I lived in so cal that the community of rowland hts was trying to dissuade a church from expanding its territory due to a wal-mart wanting to build there. the city wanted the extra tax base money that a wal-mart would provide, but of course the church wouldn't hear of such nonsense. those churches need to be a bit more sensitive about how their lack of contributions affects the communities where they operate. they really need to be taxed, espec the ones the mega churches that take up so much valuable land.

Well said.
A church, or any other religious institution, needs to be supported by the people who use that institution, that religion's adherents, and not the community at large who may, or may not be, members of that church/religion.
