Do you think that simply because your children are made aware that not every person on the planet is born attracted to the opposite sex and that these people are capable of loving, committed relationships that they will suddenly, by virtue of that knowledge, somehow change the sexual preference that they were born with and become gay?

My eleven year old son (who is, by the way, experiencing his first crush on a girl) has more understanding and more compassion for people than most adults I know. When Prop. 8 passed, he asked me why it is that adults have such a hard time just letting people live their lives happily without wanting to put restrictions on them simply because they are different? He told me that his generation would legalize gay marriage because "people who love each other should be able to marry each other if they want to."

Sounds like you've got a great kid there! I truly believe that 20 years from now, gay marriage will be legal in this country, or at least in most states. Old people just don't get it.

Me and my 16 year old brother had a conversation that mirrored that... my dad is a diehard republican who voted wholeheartedly YES on prop 8. My brother and my dad have gotten into many arguments over it until my brother finally threw his hands up and said 'FINE, you decide how everyone can live their lives, even people you've never met before, have it your way and ruin families'

I snickered a bit at my dad's reaction, which was astonishment and confusion

I honestly think it is split. Some people don't realize just how BAD they sound stating gay people shouldn't marry and are surprised that it would affect families and childrens lives, and others are HAPPY they are ruining "those" families and childrens lives believing they are holier than thou and this is punishment for leading unclean lives or whatever crap they believe.

So true. I'm curious if the pro-segregation people feel embarrassed for believe as such. Maybe in 20 years it will be the pro 8 people who are feeling bad.

California supposedly has some of the most liberal and educated folks, a vote for Obama and a vote for Prop 8 sounds about right.

My parents never had a discussion about homosexuality with me and when I found out same-sex marriage was illegal, I remember feeling really confused. "What's the big deal?" I kept asking myself.

In any case, great kid you got there.
It's all about love.

I can not believe that in 2008 their are still people who think they can tell other people how to live their personal life.
First its not personal, marriage in the US means all kinds of social and financial consequences. Taxes, Healthcare, Inheritance, Welfare and more...

Marriage is a civil (secular) union and a spiritual union for those that honor a belief and foundation that God joins two people together.

The law says marriage is 1 man and 1 women. If its none of the govt's business then why are there so many rules and laws that go with marriage.

The US gov't makes sure it is not personal. The Dept. of Commerce keeps Birth certificates and Marriage license's so that they can use them as chattel, assign debt to them and print money according to the future earnings of that family unit.

Gay marriage is fighting Religion, Tradition, Commerce, Government systems... and in each one there are ramifications to changing the definition to include whatever someone comes up with to call marriage....
Man and man, Woman and Woman, Man and horse, Man and Women, women women, women, women....
Women and Man, man, man, man,

See its messy, it's not as simple as, "We have a right to be recognized as Married and comparable to a Man and a Woman's sacred/civil/secular Union.

freedom
