Amen. Japan barely surrendered after 2 atomic weapons. To think they would have before is beyond stupid.
The weapons worked as intended to end a horrible way. Unlike Nanking, we accepted a surrender w/o further punishing Japan.
Yep and then, in a world first, helped a former enemy we just buried to become a world power once again.
The USA is the only country in world history that doesn't plunder an enemy's territory and acquire its land mass. We help them back into the ally and world power that they are today.
I spoke to an elderly Japanese woman in the late 80s who had been a girl in Osaka. She said that at the time Japan was preparing for invasion by teaching young girls to entice an American soldier close, then to stab him with a bamboo knife...and then to kill themselves. She also believed the bomb saved her life.
There were also bamboo spear brigades being organized among the elderly and suicide bombers among the Japanese teenagers.
Funny that they wouldn't issue them guns.....! Wonder why?
Exactly. People that are ignorant of history ignore or aren't aware of Japan's atrocities during the war make light of them. Their actions in Nanking, and across China, the Bataan Death March, the mass rapes of "comfort women" and human medical experiments demonstrate that the Japanese people, and their emperor, were at least as barbaric as anything the Nazis and Hitler did. Their treatment of American POWs was far worse than Germany. I have no issue with the use of those nukes if wiping out 2 cities saved ONE American life, let alone 1 million.
As long as we're on the topic, it's also good to remember that the Japanese killed 250,000 Chinese as retribution for the Doolittle raids. Even though the raids were symbolic and largely ineffectual.

And there was nothing in the experience of American war with Japan that suggested the Japanese would ever surrender. Every past incident in the war indicated that the invasion of Hokkaido would look like the invasion of Okinawa.
The (conventional) firebomb attack on Tokyo killed more people than either of the later atomic attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Fires from incendiary bombs killed more people than the bomb. Even when the bomb was used, the fires ignited the wooden homes, and it causes more death and destruction than the bomb itself.

When you go thru the museum at Peace Park, there is a book, like we see at funerals, where those attending the funeral can sign your name, and leave a comment. Many of them are from Americans apologizing. One comment has stood out in my mind. It was written by a man from Indonesia, he said "The Japanese people should never forget the atrocities their people committed in WWII either." People sometime fail to recall the completely unnecessary genocide committed by other nations leading up to, after and during WWII. Wholesale murderers like Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, etc... Which make the deaths from the atomic bombs into a footnote.
