Bigger issue is the army didn't even want these "new" tanks. There are thousands in storage and are "fundamentally at the end of their lifespan" per Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley. More interested in the Strykers being built and future vehicles. Restarting Abrams in Lima is pure political vote buying.
But now they need more tanks for parades! See how well that works?
“HOLD THE DATE!” Trump tweeted. “We will be having one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Washington, D.C., on July 4th. It will be called “A Salute To America” and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!”
"Do they (Democrats) think they own the public square?"
Yes.
"Public" means it's the property of the people of the United States. Just like our public highways, national parks and monuments (many of which are located on the Mall and nearby, including the Lincoln Memorial). It's ours. Public property.
It's Trump's as well, of course, but it's not any more his than it is yours or mine. We all own it equally.
All he needs now is a dictator costume like Blofeld and he will be complete.
Actually...this thread has called to mind a classic Hans Christian Andersen story about a glory-seeking "leader" and how he became the hit of his own parade:
Why do democrats care where Trump decides to give a July 4th public address? Do they think they own the public square?
Because Trump destroys everything he touches. He takes a joyous celebration and adds tanks and armored personnel carriers at a huge cost. He turns a national holiday into a political rally with prime restricted viewing seats for favored VIP ticket-holders. He contrives to make everything about him and willfully and forever defiles the honored space that we all remember as a once public space.
I agree with much you wrote here - but no one can forever defile that sacred space. We'll get it back again.
I don't sit at home and watch TV -- unless it is Boston Pops -- that's the best July 4th show.
I'll sit out on my balcony with a pint and watch the fireworks from a local park. The people on the opposite side of my building have a good view of the Mall. I used to envy them on the 4th but not this year. The little display at Lee District Park will be just fine.
