I think that there is a lot of back channel strategizing going on. The US is surely involved on some level.

""What kind of world will we live in if the United States of America sees a dictator brazenly violate international law with poison gas and we choose to look the other way?"

Because Syria doesn't trade oil in USD, that's why.

Same reason we had to overthrow Iraq and overthrow Libya.

Pretty sure you are wrong.

What do you think NGOs were doing? Does the name Sam LaHood ring a bell?

We have seen how well things have (NOT) turned out overthrowing dictators. While they were in power, we didn't have the unrest we see in the ME.

I would be happy to see Mubarak, Hussein, Ghadaffi in power today.

Why are you expecting the middle east to "make sense" when it hasn't done anything remotely resembling that for 10,000 years?

I said before that we the people have to step up and start telling our leaders what we want them to do and what they're going to do. We don't exactly have the best and the brightest in DC and they're easy prey to hucksters and special interests with a bribe.

Americans have failed to understand that brutal dictators like Assad, Mubarak, Kaddaffi, Saddam Hussein and the Shah of Iran -- plus various kings -- have been the only thing to keep a lid on Jihad and the spread of Islamism.

It was a mistake not to support the Shah of Iran and his chosen successor in 1979.

It was a mistake not to support Saddam Hussein -- even though he did invade Kuwait (which has been showing us so much gratitude ever since. )

It was a mistake not to support Kaddafi, even though he was behind some terrorist attacks -- which eventually stopped thanks to Reagan.

It was a mistake not support Hosni Mubarrak.

It is a mistake right now not to support Assad and wean him away from Iranian influence.

Egypt has been saved by its military. Libya is a failed state and a disaster. Iraq is a disaster -- especially because Obama refused to leave a residual force. Iran has been a disaster for the last 36 years. Syria is a disaster. Which means that Lebanon is also a disaster.

I'm surprised that Israel didn't clue us in a long time ago. You would think they would have known what was in store for us if we played "knight in shining armor" and pretended that the Middle East is like Europe.

Or maybe they did warn us, and we refused to listen.

A. Why is fighting something you feel we should be compelled to do? Reagan managed to never fight the Soviets and he did pretty well. I sometimes think you all are just projecting an arrested adolescent cowboy motif you'd like to be on our leadership.

B. Terrorists have gotten wiped out over and over under Obama. If he were on your team, you'd be very happy.
