It was corporate greed that gave us 40 hour work weeks...
And advances in technology. As machines an manufacturing processes became more efficient, people had to work less and wages rose considerably. Free market wages increases also eliminated child labor as kids no longer had to work to eat. And technological advantages eliminated their jobs and made child labor useless.

By 1920 the only kids working in factories were a few immigrant children. The unions didn't "fix" the problem until the late 1930s. lols. And they allow kids to join unions to this day. Look at Hollywood. But they "eliminated" child labor. lols.

Unions were started to keep blacks and Asians from taking "white jobs." The "Union Made" label was code for "Made by White Folk." They still exclude workers from the workforce. Not based on race so much anymore. But the entire point of a union is to eliminate jobs. It keeps the labor pool small and union wages high. At the expense of the non-union worker.

If labor unions cared about workers they would have zero problem with strike-busters, as they are workers looking for work also.

How otherwise could the official go to arbitration meetings, hearings and contract negotiations if they couldn't do it during work hours?
The positions mentioned are full time union reps, they still retain their position, air traffic controller, nurse, etc. If they are not elected as reps they go back into the workforce. The number of positions assigned as reps is negotiated by contract, management has no right to ask how what they are working on or to account for their time.

No it does not make sense to pay the salaries of union reps at tax payer expense, that is why their membership pays dues, or does that money go elsewhere.
