US Department of Transportation wants to require 'black box' recorders in all new vehicles | The Verge

Well we are at 96% already for using these devices, so another 4pts. Still, i'm sure privacy people and conspiracy nuts will be concerned.

No need for them.
But a fine example of government meddling and driving up costs in the process.

Too Big Brother-ish. I know where the black boxes are in both my GM and my Lexus. If involved in an accident, the first step is to pull such devices before accepting any insurance settlement or allowing anyone to take posession of the vehicle.

I'm not paranoid or conspiracy-theory minded, but I would not let the data contained be examined. I own that data until I accept compensation for loss of the vehicle and turn ownership, including data within the device, over to the insurance company.

Just something else they want to control. Great thing is for me I am to poor to afford a new vehicle so..and if by some chance I got one. I would just rip it out.

It would be too integrated to simply remove in new vehicles. That's another good thing about driving vehicles more than 32 years old though.

Even in my 11+ y.o. GM it's too integrated to remove. I did unplug it and the vehicle would not start. But now I know just where it is and have just one bold loosely holding it in place. Ditto with the Lexus. My GM has 200K+ miles and is getting replaced. The new one, being built now, has more technology embedded than a space shuttle so God only knows where data may be retained.

Might as well just get it over with and force us to have RFID chips in our skin and have every square foot of land on camera. If society is so dysfunctional that nobody or the government trusts each other to do anything without big brother, documentation, bureaucracy, liability redtape, and regulation up the waazoo then I don't think humanity has much potential to do anything truly great in this universe.
